5 Running Tips To Help You Become A Better Runner
Looking to start the new year off on a good foot? How about making those resolutions a little easier to hit with our top five tips for improving your running strength.
Tip #1: Run three days a week
Keeping a consistent training schedule is the best way to improve your body strength and get your muscles used to repetitive running movements. Start slow, increasing the length of your runs week by week until you’ve built up a length that works for you - manageable but not overly easy.
Tip #2: Try trail runs
To improve your running performance, try to run on unfamiliar terrain and new surfaces. Exploring the woods allows you to test out a totally different environment, making the return to pavement running one that will seem a lot easier.
Tip #3: Do hill sprints
Running isn’t solely about endurance. Completing your run with hill sprints will increase your overall strength. Run up the hill at full speed, walking down, and repeat this six to ten times, taking long, powerful strides.
Tip #4: Accelerate and decelerate frequently
Break up the monotony of your running by working short sprints into your endurance training on a regular basis. The benefit of this? It will actually increase your speed over time because you won’t make performance gains if you always run at the same pace.
Tip #5: Take walking breaks
You’re not going to hit your maximum goal in your first few runs. Adding in walking breaks isn’t a failure, it’s actually a great way for your body to get a moment of recovery, allowing you to increase the distance of your runs overtime. As your training progresses, you’ll notice you require fewer walking breaks for shorter amounts of time.
