Vestibular Rehabilitation

What is Vestibular Rehabilitation?

Vestibular Rehabilitation is an exercise-based program, designed and supervised by a specialized Physiotherapist, to improve balance and reduce problems related to dizziness.

What causes dizziness?

Dizziness can occur in patients of any age, though is one of the most common complaints in patients over 75.

Dizziness is generally not serious, but is often a sign of a mechanical problem. Dizziness can be

to an inner ear disorder, a side effect of medications, a sign of neck dysfunction or it can be due to something more serious, such as a brain or heart issue.

Who benefits from Vestibular Rehabilitation?

Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy is typically used to treat patients diagnosed with dizziness, imbalance, vertigo, Meniere's Syndrome, benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), neck-related dizziness and migraines. It can also be used to treat patients who've experienced a stroke, suffered a brain injury or who frequently fall.

What are Common Symptoms That Can Benefit from Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy?

Dizziness or blurry vision with head movements

Neck tightness, stiffness and/or pain

Imbalance or the need to hold onto objects when walking

Headaches

Frequent falls

Generalized feelings of "dizziness, wooziness and foggy head"

Veritgo / Spinning

How effective is Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy?

Often, for patients experiencing the symptoms and/or conditions mentioned above, Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy will be the sole course of treatment required. Other times, it is a part of an integrated treatment model and can be included in a pre or post surgery plan. In the majority of cases, and provided that patients follow their exercise plan, their balance and dizziness problems decrease significantly, if not completely.

How can I know if Vestibular Rehabilitation is for me?

It all begins with an appointment with your Specialized Physiotherapist who will assess your symptoms and form the best treatment plan for you.
